The Antarctic Region is spectacular throughout the summer months but each period has its own highlights. For photography, the light can be quite harsh in high summer, but in return you can watch for wildlife at any time of day or night.

October (late spring)

Optimum time to see Emperor penguins with their chicks on the ice at Snowhill Island in the Weddell Sea • Huge tabular icebergs enroute to the Weddell Sea (Iceberg Alley).

November (late spring & early summer)

The start of the season & the most adventurous time to travel • Penguin courtship rituals & nest building • Elephant seals actively courting on South Georgia • Spring flowers in bloom on the Falkland Islands • Scientists at the bases welcome the first visitors.

December & January (high summer)

The warmest months & plenty of wildlife activity • Penguin chicks hatch first in the Falklands & South Georgia, followed by the Antarctic Peninsula starting in mid-December • Longest hours of daylight • Seal pups on South Georgia.

February & March (late summer)

Receding ice allows for easier exploration further south • Whale watching it at its best • Fur seals most commonly seen on the Antarctic Peninsula • Penguin colonies very active as the adults feed the chicks • Young fur seals very playful on South Georgia.
