With many international flights connecting through Buenos Aires, Argentina’s capital city is an ideal place to break your journey. We are able to offer a range of accommodation from centrally located tourist class hotels to boutique properties across the city.
Highly recommended is the friendly and unique ‘Mansion Dandi Royal’ – a charming colonial property tucked away in the backstreets of the San Telmo district, housing a small tango academy. A cultural city tour provides an excellent way to orientate oneself with the capital, taking in the colourful streets of La Boca, the imposing Recoleta cemetery and the revolutionary Plaza de Mayo famously overlooked by Casa Rosada from whose balcony Argentina’s heroine, Eva Peron, addressed the masses. The chic Puerto Madero docks offers an array of gourmet steak houses whereas San Telmo’s cobbled streets are dotted with antique shops and traditional bars. A few nights in the ‘Paris of South America’ provide a great opportunity to catch your breath before the journey south for your Antarctic adventure.
Venturing further afield yet within easy reach of Buenos Aires, discover life on the pampas and the way of the gaucho on a typical Argentine ranch. Some estancias are just an hour or so from the city and can be visited on a day trip or for several nights. The perfect complement to your voyage, we heartily recommend a short stay at either Estancia El Ombu de Areco or Estancia Dos Talas. Both properties date from late-colonial times and offer ideal locations to relax and unwind. With friendly staff, home-cooked dishes and an informal ambience, savour the delights of a typical ‘asado’ barbeque in the impressive grounds, or just relax with a cool drink and a book in the shade of a monkey puzzle tree. You can also saddle-up and explore the surrounding ranch land by horseback or on foot – the lagoons and streams are havens for birdlife. Guests staying at Estancia El Ombu can visit the town of San Antonio and wander around the museums, silversmiths and leather goods markets, whereas Estancia Dos Talas is close to the town of Dolores; home to a quaint museum focusing on gaucho traditions.
